The DEFI matcher : a quick look at some results

Please refer to A 1000-chunk DEFI test bed extracted from the COBUILD example store for a more extended test of the defi matcher.

As of Feb 29, 2000

Note: sentences 1-20 and 34-44 are made-up examples, the remaining ones are genuine text with words selected by Liège students for their perceived difficulty.
Translations are ranked by weight, the heaviest weights representing
defi’s best guess.
defi takes as input an enhanced form of the results yielded by the Lingsoft engcg parser (refer to Parse and enhanced-parse formats). For instance, this is what the enhanced parse for the first sentence looks like:

txt(m,['looks'],
[w(0,1,text('the',u),lem('the',u),morph([m(type,def,3),m(pos,det,2),m(type,central,0),m(type,art,3),m(num,sg_or_pl,1)]),syn([s(type,dn,0,r)])),
